About This Piece
At the time of Christ the world knew nothing about the biological causes of leprosy. When someone became leprous they were labeled unclean. They were cast out of society, torn away from their family and condemned to live beneath the lowest life form on earth, cursed by God. This disease was so horrible that if anyone affected with leprosy ever dared come near other people they could be killed for doing so.
It is so remarkable that this man, which the scriptures say was full of leprosy, came and fell down at Jesus feet. One can only assume that he was so filled with such a desperate yearning to be healed that he risked being put to death for approaching others to petition Jesus. His simple words of faith, “Master, if thou wilt thou canst make me clean.” expressed his faith that Jesus could heal him.
Instead of condemnation Jesus reached out touching the man and said, “I will, be thou clean” and immediately he was made whole.
Matthew 8: 1-4
1 When he was come down from the mountain, great multitudes followed him.
2 And, behold, there came a leper and worshipped him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.
3 And Jesus put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will; be thou clean. And immediately his leprosy was cleansed.
4 And Jesus saith unto him, See thou tell no man; but go thy way, shew thyself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them.
